MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama sophomore
Danielle Henley (Hattiesburg, Miss.) had a goal and an assist as the Jaguar soccer team shut out Appalachian State 3-0 Friday night at The Cage.
The Jags have won their last 10 Sun Belt Conference outings and haven't lost a league match since Oct. 20, 2013, a span of 15 matches; they currently stand at 10-2-1 overall and 4-0 in SBC play. The Mountaineers fall to 6-4-3 and 2-1-1.
"I was really pleased with the girls; this season we've struggled to put a 90-minute game together," USA head coach
Graham Winkworth said. "We'd play a good half, then slacked off, or vice versa. Today, I thought for an hour to 70 minutes, we were very good. If we start to put long periods like that together, we can be a very dangerous team.
"It's nice to get back at home. We've got a beautiful field where we can actually play soccer the way it should be played. We're very fortunate here to have that. I was really pleased with the way we played football; we moved the ball around pretty well and we were comfortable today."
Henley assisted on the match-winner in the 15th minute before scoring the Jags' second of the contest shortly after halftime.
Senior
Jordan Duncan (Bay St. Louis, Miss.) put South Alabama up 15 minutes into the contest. Henley fed sophomore
Chardé Hannah (Tupelo, Miss.) down the right sideline, who crossed to Duncan inside the top of the six-yard box. It was Duncan's second goal of the season.
"I think (the goal) settled us down," Winkworth said. "Appalachian State is a very good team, have some very good players and are well-coached. Scoring an early goal helped settled us down because last year we struggled a little bit at their place. It was a great ball down the wing, an excellent run, a good cross and a composed finish.
"Jordan is a very strong, physical-type forward, and she's not letting her (injured) arm hold her back. She worked extremely hard tonight. She's one of our more fitter forwards this season and I've been really pleased with the workrate she's put in for her senior year because she struggled from a fitness standpoint the last couple of years and worked extremely hard in the offseason to come back ready for this year."
It took just over three minutes into the second half for Henley to double USA's lead. She took a pass from sophomore
Ashlynn Jones (Pickerington, Ohio) at the top of the box and blasted it past the App State goalkeeper.
Just over four minutes later, senior
Nini Rabsatt-Smith (Montgomery, Ala.) added to the Jags' advantage, converting from short range after getting on the end of a loose ball in the goalmouth after a corner kick.
Defensively South Alabama held Appalachian State to nine shots overall and just two on net. Junior
Sarah Hay (Waxahachie, Texas) made two saves for her third shutout of the season, and fifth overall for the team.
"I thought we defended very well, from front to back," Winkworth said. "Defending starts at the front and they ran a lot up front defending, and worked extremely hard. The backline was very solid throughout. I think there were one or two slight moments where they looked like they might get through, but we were pretty comfortable back there. I was really pleased with the girls."
The Jaguars host Texas State Sunday at 1 p.m.
