HATTIESBURG, Miss. – University of South Alabama freshman
Laura Valkova (Piestany, Slovakia) led the women's tennis team to their fifth-straight win with a 5-2 victory over Southern Miss on Sunday at the USM Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars improved to 5-0 overall and the Golden Eagles dropped to 2-5 this spring.
"We had a solid win against a feisty, talented Southern Miss team," said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser.
Valkova and freshman
Monica Mitta (Fairhope, Ala.) picked up the first win for the Jags with an 8-3 victory over
Mahitha Dadireddy and
Karina Gurgenyan at No. 2. Valkova later clinched the match when she defeated
Lisa Noderer 6-2, 6-2 on the No. 3 court.
Sophomore
Paula Sanchez (Bogota, Columbia) and freshman
Laura Matuskova (Bratislava, Slovakia) defeated Noderer and
Kathrin Waidner 8-5 at No. 3 to secure the doubles point for USA.
Carolin Drescher and
Alex Kitchen edged junior
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and sophomore
Michaela Meszarosova (Bratislava, Slovakia) 8-7 (7-4) in the No. 1 flight.
In singles action, junior
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) gave South Alabama a 2-0 lead when she dropped Waidner 6-3, 6-0 on the No. 5 court. Meszarosova followed up with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Dadireddy at the No. 1 spot.
Drescher picked up the first point for USM when she topped Newton 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. After Valkova's victory, Mitta downed Gurgenyan 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 flight. Kitchen closed out the day when she outlasted Sanchez 7-5, 4-6, (10-5) on the No. 6 court.
"There are plenty of positives to take away from today, but at the same time this match showed that we have a lot of work ahead of us in order to become the team we are capable of becoming."
South Alabama is back in action Thursday Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. when they head to Central Florida.
