MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team will face its fourth nationally-ranked opponent of the season Wednesday when it travels to No. 40 Tulane for a 2 p.m. match.
The Jaguars enter the match with a 14-8 record – 0-3 against ranked schools – and have alternated wins and losses in their last seven matches. Wednesday will serve as the team’s last road contest before closing out the regular season at home Saturday against UAB.
USA is coming off a 1-1 weekend in South Carolina, dropping a 4-0 match at Winthrop before getting a 6-1 win at USC Upstate on Sunday.
“Wednesday is another good opportunity to prepare ourselves for the upcoming conference tournament,” USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. “Tulane is having a great year and it will be good to see how we respond to the challenge of playing them on the road.”
The Green Wave (15-6) have won their last five matches and 10 of their last 11. In their unbeaten run they have dropped just four points with four of the five matches coming away from home, and earned a road win over No. 53 South Florida.
Since losing 18 straight to the Jaguars over a period of 17 years, the Green Wave have won five in a row in the series, including a 6-1 win in Mobile last season.
Klara Vyskocilova, No. 63 in the latest ITA rankings, paces Tulane at the No. 1 flight with an 11-5 record in the spring and 18-7 overall. She is 4-4 against ranked opponents.
The Jags’
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) bring win streaks of three and eight, respectively, into Wednesday’s match. Newton has won three straight and seven of her last eight, with the lone defeat an 0-4 (ret.) decision against Richmond. Martin has earned a victory in eight consecutive matches—seven in straight sets—and moved up to the No. 3 flight for the first time this season against USC Upstate in a 6-3, 6-2 win.
