Making its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance, the sixth-seeded Jaguar men’s tennis team defeats No. 3 seed Auburn, 4-0, in the first match of the NCAA Region III Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. Ranked 22nd in the nation entering the postseason, USA was led by the duo of Peter Kuhn and Jan Hermansson — both future inductees into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame — who were both named first-team all-Sun Belt Conference in singles and doubles. Later that month, Hermansson became the first individual in program history to earn All-America honors in singles, while Kuhn and Clive Ullyett accomplished the same feat in doubles.

The South Alabama women’s tennis team advances to the NCAA Southeast Regional final with a 5-4 victory over top-seeded and host Vanderbilt, extending the Lady Jaguars’ winning streak to a school-record 18 matches in a row. In USA’s second straight NCAA appearance, the women — who were rated 28th in the country at the start of postseason play — picked up the program’s first-ever NCAA victory with a 5-0 defeat of Kentucky in the opening round of the regional. The Lady Jaguars were paced by future USA Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Cindy Summers, while the back half of the lineup included a trio of freshmen — Vanda Novakova, Jana Bourova and Melanie Pieterse.
