WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENS SPRING BREAK WITH LAMAR TUESDAY

MOBILE, Ala. - The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team will look to build on its recent successes when they host Lamar Tuesday at 11 a.m. on the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Jaguars won two straight last week and enter the match with an 8-4 record.

Propelling the team through its recent wins has been the bottom four spots in the singles lineup. The Jags are a combined 31-17 at flights 3-6. Sophomore Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) is 8-3 this spring and has won seven matches in straight sets.

“Every match right now is another opportunity for us to improve and we do have plenty of room improvement,” said USA head Jaco Keyser. “We are within reach of starting to play some good tennis if we keep competing hard and keep pushing things along.”

In doubles action, sophomores Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) and Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) are undefeated on the season and post a 7-0 record.

Tuesday will mark the 11th meeting between the Jaguars and the Cardinals. USA holds a 9-1 advantage over LU after a 6-1 win last season. Lamar is 4-4 in their spring campaign. Alessandra Pennesi leads the Cardinals with a 4-0 mark in the bottom three spots.

“I think this team finally understands that nothing will come easy and regardless of potential we have to compete and fight for everything we get,” said Keyser. “We are looking forward to a busy week with plenty of matches.”
