MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team continues their five-match homestand as they host Sun Belt foes Florida International and North Texas this weekend at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
South Alabama will face FIU Friday at 1 p.m. and UNT Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Jaguars are 3-0 on the season and are coming off a 7-0 win over Jacksonville State and a 6-1 victory over William Carey last Saturday. USA last started a season unbeaten through three matches in 2008.
“We definitely showed improvement from the week before and at this time of the season, all we are looking for are week-by-week improvements,” said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser.
Jaguar sophomore
Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) brings a 2-0 spring record at the No. 1 spot, winning both matches in straight sets. She has won her last 20 dual matches dating back to last season. Sophomore
Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) posts a 3-0 mark in her spring campaign at No. 4.
The four South Alabama newcomers are a combined 8-2 in the spring, including freshman
Paula Sanchez’s (Bogota, Colombia) 3-0 mark at Nos. 5 and 6.
The Panthers enter the match with a 0-3 record after falling to Florida Gulf Coast, No. 24 Yale and No. 70 Columbia. Carlotta Orlando leads FIU with a 2-1 mark in the top two spots.
Florida International leads the all-time series 11-10 and has won nine in a row. FIU defeated USA 4-3 last season when the two teams met in Denton, Texas.
“Our expectations for this weekend are just to keep improving,” said Keyser. “It doesn’t matter who we play, we’re just trying to control our side of the net, improve our game and inch by inch get better as the season progresses.”
The Mean Green have posted a 3-1 mark in the spring season. UNT fell to No. 13 Texas A&M 4-1 in its season opener, but rebounded with a 4-3 win over No. 41 Minnesota to start its current three-match win streak.
Sunday will mark the fifth meeting between the North Texas and South Alabama. The Mean Green leads the all-time series with the Jaguars 3-1. The two teams faced off last February when UNT topped USA 5-2.
