MOBILE, Ala. – May 3, 2013, will mark the 50th Anniversary of the University of South Alabama. Throughout the academic year, the USA Department of Athletics will recognize “50 Great Moments In Jaguar Athletics” to honor past teams, coaches and student-athletes for their accomplishments.
1964
With the support of President Dr. Frederick P. Whiddon, the South Alabama Department of Athletics was created during the 1964-65 academic year. Mel Lucas was named the first Director of Athletics, a role he would serve in until 1980; he was later part of the school’s inaugural Athletic Hall of Fame class in 1989 after also initiating the men’s basketball program and filling the role of head coach the first three seasons of competition. The original mascot of the department was a Jaguar named Mishka, while the school’s first colors were black and gold.
