MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team heads to Hattiesburg, Miss. to face Southern Miss at noon on Saturday at the USM Tennis Courts.
The Jaguars enter the match with an 11-4 overall record and a seven-match win streak after picking up four wins over spring break, March 13-18.
“We had a good week of matches, especially when we played McNeese and Lamar,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “From a competitive standpoint I think that’s exactly where we want to be. From a playing standpoint there was about 45 minutes where I felt we were playing on the level we’ve been striving for. If we can just keep working towards that during matches we should be in good shape.”
Freshman Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) went undefeated in singles and doubles and improved to 10-4 each in her spring campaign. She currently holds a seven-match win streak and is 6-0 at the No. 2 flight.
Sophomore Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and freshman Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) each improved to 13-0 in singles for the spring, with four and three wins, respectively, last week. Newton has 14 straight wins, while Martin holds a 13-match win streak.
“It’s nice to be working on things while you’re winning,” said Keyser. “Hopefully getting a taste of winning will fuel the desire to keep on doing the little things. We need to keep spending more time on the practice courts and hopefully keep on winning more in the future.”
South Alabama leads the all-time series with the Golden Eagles 10-0. The two teams last played in April 2002.
USM posts a 2-14 mark in the spring and broke a 13-match losing streak when they picked up a 5-2 win over Southern University Sunday.
“We have four or five matches left and those are good opportunities to keep on getting better so by the time the conference tournament comes up we will be as best prepared as possible,” said Keyser.
