WOMEN’S TENNIS BLANKED AT SAMFORD

Results

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Samford won in straight sets at the top three singles flights in a 4-0 shutout of the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team Saturday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.

The Bulldogs finish their season-opening five-match homestand undefeated while the Jaguars drop to 2-2.

“Today was a rough day,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “We were dealt some adversity and did not overcome it. There are no excuses and the bottom line is we got outcompeted. That is inexcusable for us. We are a good team and we will improve on today's performance.”

Samford earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2. Kristin Lewis and Lindsey Mallory defeated sophomore Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and senior Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) 8-5, and the duo of Rebecca Kirven and Madelie Janse Van Rensburg topped USA’s pair of freshman Ramona Ghermani (Bad Wimpfen, Germany) and senior Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) 8-3.

In singles it was all Samford as the Bulldogs dropped just nine games total at Nos. 1 and 3. Lewis defeated Volman 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 and Stephanie N’tcha won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 over freshman Mariya Krachok.

Van Rensburg needed a tiebreaker in the first set in her victory over Hines at No. 2, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

The Jaguars will face UAB Sunday at noon at the Samford Tennis Center.
