WOMEN’S TENNIS EARNS PAIR OF VICTORIES AT SOUTHERN REGIONALS

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of South Alabama sophomores Emily Newton (Dothan, Ala.) and Mariya Krachok (Kiev, Ukraine) picked up the only doubles win for the Jaguars, while sophomore Mary Angela Martin (Mobile, Ala.) claimed a victory in singles at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships Friday.

The lone doubles victory for the Jaguars came when Newton and Krachok defeated Karen Martinez and Harshini Reddy of Jackson State 8-0 in the ‘A’ draw.

Martin advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Reddy in the singles ‘A’ draw, but fell 6-2, 6-2 to the No. 6 seed Alexandra Perper of Mississippi State.

Marija Milutinovic of Ole Miss edged Newton 6-4, 7-5 in the ‘A’ draw. Emma Levy of Tulane advanced on a walkover against Newton in the consolation round of 32.

Krachok fell in the round of 64 to Hila Elster of Tulane 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 and later lost 7-5, 6-2 to Lauren Caballero of Samford in the ‘A” draw consolation round of 32.

Tournament play continues Saturday morning.
