MOBILE, Ala. – Louisiana at Lafayette dropped just four games in singles to sweep the University of South Alabama women’s tennis team 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Championships Friday morning at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
The third-seeded Ragin’ Cajuns (10-6) move on to the semifinals and will play either No. 2 Louisiana at Monroe or No. 7 Denver Saturday morning. The Jaguars, the No. 11 seed, finish the 2011 campaign with a 3-13 record.
“We gave it a good effort,” USA head coach
Jaco Keyser said. “Talent-wise, they’re just better than us, bottom line. We worked hard and competed hard. But when they come out with that mindset, Lafayette is a tough team to beat.”
ULL quickly earned the doubles point with an 8-0 win at No. 3 and 8-3 victory at No. 1.
Mia Gordon and
Sandra Alhqvist blanked USA’s pair of freshman
Julia Ivanova (Bourgas, Bulgaria) and sophomore Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla.) while
Audrey Wooland and
Julie Mazinova closed out senior
Katie Welch (Mobile, Ala.) and junior
Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) to put the Ragin’ Cajuns up 1-0.
“They have legitimate, above-average doubles and when they come out and execute, you have to work hard to get into a match and we didn’t get any looks,” Keyser said.
Louisiana at Lafayette earned quick victories at the lower end of the lineup to finish off the sweep. Alhqvist defeated Ivanova 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 before
Mia Gordon (6-0, 6-2) and
Milou Israel (6-1, 6-1) dropped two games each in their wins over Gale and sophomore
Jess Courtnell (Newcastle, England), respectively.
“They’re a good team and when they come out ready like that, they’re a tough out,” Keyser said. “They played up to their capabilities and didn’t really give us a look in any of the matches. Job well done to them.”
