USA WOMEN’S TENNIS UNABLE TO OVERCOME MIDDLE TENNESSEE

USA vs. MTSU box score

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.
– University of South Alabama juniors Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) and Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) scored for the Jaguars, but it was not enough to push USA past Middle Tennessee Sunday morning at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.

With the 4-3 win MTSU improved its record to 6-8 in dual matches. USA is now 1-9 in its spring campaign.

“We put in a lot of good effort today and played solid doubles,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “It was good to see Alina and Chané competing well and winning matches at the top of the lineup. Hopefully they will keep improving and stay at that level next year.”

The Blue Raiders picked up the first victory of the day at No. 3 doubles, but the Jaguars responded with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 flights to secure the point.

The South Alabama duo of Hines and senior Katie Welch (Mobile, Ala.) defeated Yuiri Nomoto and Lisa Maas 8-6 on the No. 1 court followed by Volman and sophomore Jess Courtnell’s (Newcastle, England) 9-7 victory over Lexi Brand and Marietta Bigus in the No. 2 spot.

MTSU’s Alex Dachos did not give up a game in her 6-0, 6-0 defeat of South Alabama freshman Julia Ivanova (Bourgas, Bulgaria) at No. 6 singles to tie the match 1-1. The Blue Raiders then added a straight-sets win in the No. 5 position giving them the 2-1 lead.

Hines added her second win of the weekend with her dominating 6-1, 6-0 victory over Bigus on the No. 3 court to tie the contest again.

After Nomoto downed Welch 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Volman ended Carla Nava’s four-match win streak by a score of 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 flight. Brand broke the 3-3 tie and clinched the match, defeating Courtnell 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot.

The Jags return to Mobile, Ala. for a three-match home stand beginning with their contest against Missouri-St. Louis on the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Admission to all South Alabama home matches is free.
