USA vs. FAU box score
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team fell 7-0 to Sun Belt Conference opponent Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon at Patch Reef Park on FAU’s campus.
USA fell to 1-7 on the season while Florida Atlantic improved to 10-10 in its spring campaign.
“We definitely bounced back today with regards to attitude and body language,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “FAU was a beatable team, but they pulled through and got the win today.”
The Owls earned wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default.
After beginning doubles play down by one the South Alabama duo of junior Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sophomore Jess Courtnell (Newcastle, England) downed Natasha Basma and Erika Mrazkova 8-1.
Florida Atlantic won the doubles point with Justine Humair and Marlene Ryan’s 8-6 victory over Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla.) and Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) in the No. 2 flight.
In singles action the Owls secured points on courts 3-5 in straight sets.
In the No. 1 spot Volman won her first set against Humair before eventually falling 0-6, 6-2, (10-5). Hines gave up only one game in her first set but dropped the point on the No. 2 court 1-6, 6-4, (10-5) to Ryan.
The Jags resume play on March 25 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. against Sun Belt Conference rival Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m.
