USA vs. FIU box score
MIAMI – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team was shut out by Sun Belt Conference foe No. 61 Florida International 7-0 on the FIU Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.
The Jaguars fell to 1-6 on the season while the Panthers advanced their record to 9-5 on the spring.
“It was a bad day for the Jags,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “FIU is a talented team that outplayed and outfought us. They ran us out of the building. Hopefully we can learn from it and show some pride tomorrow.”
At No. 1 doubles FIU’s Liset Brito and Maria Spenceley defeated senior Katie Welch (Mobile, Ala.) and junior Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) 8-1 followed by Giulietta Boha and Christine Seredni’s point-clinching win on the No. 2 court.
In the No. 3 flight Florida International’s Rita Maisak paired up with Lisa Johnson to top the South Alabama tandem of sophomore Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla.) and freshman Julia Ivanova (Bourgas, Bulgaria) 8-2.
At No. 1 singles Welch retired against No. 81 Brito due to an injury giving FIU the 2-0 lead.
In singles action the Panthers picked up straight-sets wins on courts 3-6. In the No. 2 spot Volman came back to win the second set against Johnson before eventually falling 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, (10-5)
