HINES CLINCHES FIRST WOMEN'S TENNIS WIN OF THE SEASON

USA vs. Austin Peay box score

MOBILE, Ala.
– University of South Alabama junior Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) won in straight sets to give the women’s tennis team a 4-3 victory over Austin Peay Friday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

“I was happy for Chané to clinch the win today,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “She’s a hard worker and she puts in the time on the practice courts. It’s just nice for her to validate it with a win.”

South Alabama (1-3) picked up its first doubles point of the season thanks to a default win at No. 3 and a 9-7 win by senior Katie Welch (Mobile, Ala.) and junior Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) over Vanja Tomic and Kimberly Loo 9-7 in the No. 1 flight.

“I liked the energy today,” said Jaco Keyser. “The way it sounded out there was great. It sounded like the old days. This is a push in the right direction. We played with a little bit of an edge and there were lots of confrontations. It was good to see that and just to hear us out there today.”

South Alabama also won at No. 6 singles by default putting them up 2-0.

Volman added a quick third point with her 6-4, 6-0 victory over Carolin Weikard on the No. 2 court.

Austin Peay (5-5) followed with straight-sets wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles to pull within 3-2. In the No. 1 flight Tomic topped Welch 6-4, 6-3 and at No. 4, Rachel Margolies defeated Jess Courtnell (Newcastle, England) 6-3, 6-3.

Hines followed with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win at No. 3 over Andra Cornea to give the Jags the victory.

Next up for the Jaguars is a grueling four-match road trip to Florida where they will take on Boston University, North Texas, Florida International and Florida Atlantic.
