LAFAYETTE, La. – The University of South Alabama's Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) won twice but it wasn't enough as the Jaguars fell 5-2 to McNeese State Sunday in Lafayette, La.
“We competed hard today, but McNeese is a good team and we are not playing very well right now,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “We have some time before our next match and we need to make use of it wisely if we are looking to get a positive result next time out.”
In the No. 1 doubles flight juniors Hines and Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) downed Ilona Serchenko and Ralitsa Pirdopska 8-5. Jaguar sophomores Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla.) and Jess Courtnell (Newcastle, England) dropped a tough 8-5 decision to Kwynn Biggs and Maria del Rocio Frausto Cornish on the No. 2 court.
The Cowgirls earned wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles by default.
Hines and Courtnell picked up South Alabama’s only two points of the match at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Hines defeated Pirdopska in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 flight while Courtnell came from behind to beat Anastasia Surkova 4-6, 6-1, (10-8) on the No. 3 court.
At the No. 1 spot Volman dropped a tough 7-6, 7-5 decision to Serchenko. The Cowgirls’ Tea Tvrtkovic secured a 6-2, 6-3 win over Gale at No. 4 singles and Biggs blanked Julia Ivanova (Bourgas, Bulgaria) 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 position.
The Jags will be back in action Feb. 26 when they host the Lady Cardinals of Lamar.
