USA vs. Lamar box score


MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team (0-3) was topped by Lamar (5-0) 7-0 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts Saturday.

“It was nice to get out there again and play against some good competition,” said USA head coach Jaco Keyser. “Lamar is a good team. They’re a real feisty, competitive and consistent team. They were definitely too good for us today.”

The Lady Cardinals’ Natalia Mayagoitia and Diana Mendez took the first doubles match of the day in the No. 3 spot, blanking sophomores Anna Davidson (Arab, Ala.) and Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla.) 8-0.

At No. 2 doubles junior Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) and sophomore Jess Courtnell (Newcastle, England) responded with an 8-1 victory over Helene Czudek and Alessandra Pennesi.

The doubles decision came down to the back-and-forth battle on the No. 1 court. Senior Katie Welch (Mobile, Ala.) and junior Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the match 3-3 before eventually falling to Mariaryeni Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi 8-5.

In singles action, Lamar picked up straight-sets wins on all six courts.

In the No. 4 position Gale dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Pennesi, followed by Volman’s 6-0, 6-0 loss to Gutierrez on the No. 1 court.

Czudek clinched the match for the Lady Cardinals in the No. 6 spot with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Jaguar freshman Julia Ivanova (Bourgas, Bulgaria).

Davidson was down 6-0, 1-0 to Mendez in the No. 5 position before retiring due to injuries. Courtnell followed at No. 3 singles falling to Mayagoitia 6-2, 6-4.

Harbuzi ended the day defeating Hines 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at No. 2 singles.

The Jags return to action March 11 when they host Austin Peay at 2 p.m. on the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. Admission to all home matches is free.
