PETE TOLBERT, LONG TIME SUPPORTER OF USA ATHLETICS, PASSES AWAY

MOBILE, Ala. – Pete Tolbert’s contributions and efforts on behalf of the University of South Alabama’s Department of Athletics were recognized earlier this year when his name was attached to the school’s annual awards ceremony that takes place in the spring — the inaugural Pete Tolbert Night of Champions was held on the main floor of the Mitchell Center April 29.

Tolbert, a long time supporter of Jaguar Athletics and particularly the USA baseball program, passed away at the age of 63 Monday.  A visitation will be held Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Crossroads Baptist Church on 9260 Cottage Hill Road.

“Pete was arguably one of the most loyal and supportive donors of South Alabama Athletics for so many years,” Jaguar Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann said.  “Every member of our department would do well to emulate Pete’s class and integrity.  He will always be part of the Jaguar family.”

He is survived by his wife Gloria, five children including his son Patrick who made the endowed donation in his father’s name to pay for the expenses of the Pete Tolbert Night of Champions in perpetuity, 14 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

The Pete Tolbert Night of Champions is the Athletic Department’s annual celebration honoring members of USA’s 17 sport programs as well as the many individuals who support the efforts of the department, recognizing success both in the classroom and competition.
