USA?S SCHWARTZ EARNS ALL-SBC HONORS, SCORES IN TWO EVENTS AS CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINUE

MOBILE, Ala. - After the second day of the Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships, University of South Alabama track and field competitor Lindsay Schwartz (Watertown, Wis.) added another all-conference performance to Jags’ count, bringing the total tally to four for the weekend.

The sophomore earned all-SBC recognition after grabbing the Jaguars’ second victory of the event in the women’s heptathlon with 4,966 points, outscoring second-place finisher Carolyn Lewis from Arkansas State by just under 300 points. Schwartz surpassed teammates Ebonee Moody (Beaumont, Miss.) and Noelle Jones (Pensacola, Fla.), who both scored; Moody claimed fifth place with 4,447 points while Jones came in eighth with 4,290.

In addition, Schwartz qualified for the 400-meter hurdles finals after finishing sixth in the preliminaries with a time of 1:04.04. The sophomore also chipped in a few more points for the Lady Jags with the fifth spot in the high jump with a 1.64m/5-04.00 leap.

“Lindsay is a tremendous competitor,” USA head track and field coach Paul Brueske said. “She really stepped up for us big time today, with the all-conference performance and scoring points for us in the high jump and the 400-meter hurdles. We’re really proud of her.”

Senior Saber Salah (Strasborg, France) qualified for the 800 meters finals with a time of 1:54.43 in the preliminaries for a third place finish, while freshman Ashton Krause (Mobile, Ala.) qualified in the 110-meter hurdles with an eighth-place finish at 15.14 seconds. Junior Anton Graphenreed (Columbus, Ga.) also qualified for the 100-meter dash finals, crossing the line eighth in the preliminaries with a time of 10.72 seconds.

Sophomore Damien Lee (Mobile, Ala.) tossed in five points for the Jaguars with a fourth-place finish in the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:21.20, missing all-conference recognition by less than a second. Freshman Scott Lasiter grabbed two points in the event with a 9:34.17 time for seventh place.

“Damien really stepped it up today,” Brueske said. “He scored some valuable points for us.”

“Damien getting fourth place is pretty amazing,” USA distance coach Tim Goldsack said. “The kid was a walk on a year ago and now he’s fourth in the conference. I’m a little speechless, he’s improvement has been more immense than anyone could have expected.”

For the Lady Jags, freshman Shakeria Williams (Foley, Ala.) qualified for the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 24.27 in the preliminaries, crossing the finish line sixth.

The men’s team is currently in third place with 29 points, while the women sit in sixth with the same amount of points.

“We’re getting better as a team and the program is progressing, and our all-conference athletes are a good indication of that,” Brueske said. “We’re looking to be competitive in the last day. If our athletes keep performing to their capabilities, then we should make a good show and finish well.”

The Jags will continue competing tomorrow as the contest resumes Sunday with the men’s hammer throw at 10 a.m.
