ATLANTA - With the first round of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Nationals approaching in two weeks, the University of South Alabama track and field team will head to Atlanta this weekend for the Georgia Tech Invitational to give some team members a final opportunity to qualify for the national meet.
“We’re bringing a limited squad to the meet,” USA head track and field coach Paul Brueske said. “This will be another chance for some of our athletes to make it the NCAA Championships.”
For the men, sophomore Zac Edwards is competing after an all-conference performance at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championship this past weekend. The Jag distance runner earned second-place in the 5,000-meters with a time of 14.27.82. Also competing will be fellow sophomore Glen Odom, who missed all-SBC honors by barely two feet with a fourth-place finish in the javelin with a 59.28m/194-06.00 throw.
Sophomore Steven Nobles – who will look to improve his all-conference mark for third (58.50m/178-10.00) – rounds out the Jags competing on the men’s side.
For the women, sophomore Latifah Johnson and freshman Noelle Jones will be competing. Johnson will shoot higher in the hammer throw after finishing fourth at the league meet with a mark of 51.62m/169.04.00, while Jones will look to improve her eighth-place mark in the heptathlon and her fifth-place finish in the javelin (43.15/141-07.00).
