WELCH EARNS POINT, JAGS FALL TO GEORGIA STATE 6-1

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama women’s tennis team fell 6-1 to Georgia State Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.

“We played decent doubles and gave ourselves a chance to win the point there, but we couldn’t hold on,” USA head coach Jaco Keyser said. “In singles we didn’t play well. Georgia State did a good job. They were stronger and more competitive. Basically, they ran us out of our own building.”

In doubles action Georgia State’s Tereza Lerova teamed up with Katerina Gresova to defeat Katie Welch and Marie Boura 8-6 at the No. 1 flight claiming the point for the Panthers. The Jaguar tandem of Chané Hines and Jess Courtnell followed on the No. 2 court with an 8-6 win over Linda Hricistova and Kir Kemp.

GSU’s No. 22 Diana Nakic extended her 16-match winning streak and clinched the match with her quick 6-1, 6-2 victory over Boura at No. 1 singles. The Panthers picked up the next two points at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots in straight sets.

The Jaguars’ Welch battled back from a one-set deficit to beat Georgia State’s Kemp 3-6, 6-4, (10-1) at the No. 2 position scoring the only point of the match for South Alabama.

The Panthers earned wins at No. 3 doubles and Nos. 5 and 6 singles by default.

Next up for the Jags is a road trip to Norfolk, Va. for a pair of matches against Old Dominion and No. 27 Virginia Commonwealth April 10-11.
