MOBILE, Ala. --- Louisiana at Lafayette won three singles matches in straight sets en route to a 5-2 women’s tennis victory over the University of South Alabama Sunday afternoon at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts.
USA concludes the regular season with a 1-12 record while ULL improves to 9-9 on the season. Up next for South Alabama is the Sun Belt Conference Championships starting Thursday in New Orleans.
The Ragin’ Cajuns took the doubles point with a forfeit at No. 3 and an 8-5 win at No. 2. But the Jags earned a win at No. 1 when junior
Katie Welch (Mobile, Ala.) and sophomore
Chané Hines (Johannesburg, South Africa) topped the Cajuns’ duo of
Julie Mazinova and
Mia Gordon 8-4.
“They played today like they play in practice,” said Jaguar head coach
Jaco Keyser. “We’ve been practicing great but there’s a tremendous drop-off once we get into matches and today was one of the few times we carried that practice over into the match. That was a great win against a quality team.”
The two USA points came after ULL had earned the first five results. At No. 3, Hines defeated
Briggitt Marcovich in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, while sophomore
Marie Boura (Paris, France) rallied from a set down to topple Mazinova 2-6, 6-4, (10-6).
“I thought we played pretty well, to be honest,” said Keyser. “I liked the doubles a lot and in singles, we started off slow but it was probably one of the better matches we’ve played at number three and especially at number two. That was a good quality win there. It was nice to see Marie dig in after a slow start and come back and win that match.”
Louisiana at Lafayette clinched the match early in singles, losing just three games at the bottom three spots of the lineup and got a forfeit at No. 6.
