MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama’s Romain Bocaert, Lucas Viel and Christian Kuehne advanced to the second round of the qualifying draw on day one of the ITF Futures Tournament at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Kuehne, a sophomore, dropped only one game in his 6-1, 6-0 victory over Adam Liu of the United States. Bocaert downed Great Britain’s David Baxendine in straight sets 6-3, 6-0. Viel had a tougher time against fellow Jaguar Dauw Kruger, but came out on top with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win.
The three other USA athletes that competed today were Alexandre Bernard, Hanno Bartsch and Jairo Seur. Bernard fell to No. 1574 James Chaudry of Great Britain 7-5, 6-2. The No. 1 seed, Serbia’s Vladimir Obradovic, defeated Bartsch in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Seur dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to former Jaguar Aaron Krisan on the United States.
Play will resume tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. Kuehne will battle with Obradovic who is ranked 583rd in the world. Bocaert will face fellow Frenchman No. 1086 Matthieu Roy, the 15th seed, while Viel takes on the third seed, No. 696, Daniel Danilovic.
