Jags Fall To Southern Miss 7-5

MOBILE, Ala. ? Kameron Brunty’s ninth-inning RBI single proved to be the difference as Southern Miss topped the University of South Alabama 7-5 Tuesday night at Stanky Field.

“Southern Miss deserved to win,” head coach Steve Kittrell said. “They got the clutch hits at the end when they had to have them. We made a bad pitch when we had two strikes on Brunty, we can’t give him a pitch to hit there, and he beat us.”

Brunty’s game-winning single brought in Bo Davis to break a 5-5 tie. He finished the night 3-for-5 with two runs and five RBI, while Davis reached base in all five trips to the plate without recording a hit; he walked four times and was hit by a pitch.

USA (23-27) led 5-4 after six innings, but Brunty drove in his fourth run of the night with a RBI single to tie the game at 5-5.

Greg Johnson (4-6) took the loss in relief. He allowed two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning. Josh Fields (2-0) worked 3.0 shutout innings to earn the win for the Golden Eagles.

Southern Miss got on the board first after Corey Stevens led off the second inning with a double against Jag starting pitcher Ryan Bohanan. Stevens advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly from B.A. Vollmuth.

Bohanan worked 3.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits in his second start of the season.

The Jags quickly tied the game with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Derek O'Reilly drew a leadoff walk and eventually came home to score on Clint Reynolds’ RBI single.

USA took a 2-1 lead when Chris Davis knocked his second home run of the season over the right field wall in the bottom of the fourth, but the Golden Eagles answered with a three-spot in their next trip to the plate.

Kyle Maxie led off with a double against reliever Michael Raia, and two outs later Davis drew his second walk of the game to set up Brunty’s three-run homer.

The Jags cut the deficit in half at 4-3 when Adam Heisler doubled and came around to score on David Doss’ RBI single in the bottom of the fifth. They regained the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the bullpen was unable to hold the advantage.

Nathaniel Lami delivered his first triple of the season to score Davis, and Reynolds followed with his second RBI single of the night.

Reynolds finished 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI, and Doss was the only other Jag with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

USA returns to action Thursday night at 6 p.m. when it hosts Troy at Stanky Field for the final Sun Belt Conference series of the season.
