MOBILE, Ala. ---
Rob Phillips has signed a National Letter-of-Intent to play men’s basketball at the University of South Alabama for the 2009-10 season, the school announced this week.
Phillips, a 6-2 shooting guard, currently attends Charis Prep School in his hometown of Goldsboro, N.C.
A 2006 graduate of C.B. Aycock High School in Pikeville, N.C., Phillips averaged 23.1 points per game last season for Charis, shooting 56.9% from 3-point land and 92% at the free throw line.
Phillips earned fourth team prep school all-American honors from USPrepBasketball.com.
The Crimson Tide, coached by
Carlos Peralta, posted a 40-5 record and won the National Prep School Tournament. Phillips was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player to leading the Tide to their second straight national title.
“Known for his hard work off the court and his leadership on the court, it’s easy to see how Rob has had such a successful prep career,” said USA head coach
Ronnie Arrow. “He’s been able to develop his skills at Charis, one of the top prep schools in the country, and what we will be getting is a very mature individual who can shoot the ?3’ and run the team. He is a very versatile player that can play several positions. We look forward to him coming in and being a leader on this team.”
Phillips joins
Raymond Sims,
Tim Williams,
Augustine Rubit,
Javier Carter and
Andre Gowins in next year’s class. Rubit, Carter and Gowins signed in November.
South Alabama went 20-13 last season and advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game. The Jaguars have won 20 or more games in each of the last four seasons and have made three trips to the NCAA postseason during that time.
