Lady Jags in 12th After Day One In Oxford

OXFORD, Miss. ? Shirley Harvey shot an opening-round 77 to lead the University of South Alabama to 12th place at 325 after the first day of the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate Friday at the Country Club of Oxford.

“She had a bad start, but she battled back nicely, so that was good to see,” head coach T.J. Jackson said. “But, we’re going to have to play a lot better to turn it around in the next couple of days.”

The Lady Jags shot a 37-over-par 325 to place them 12th with two rounds to go. Though they’re 24 shots back of tournament-leader Tulane, the Lady Jags are only two strokes back of Belmont in ninth place.

Harvey’s 77 placed her in a tie for 14th individually, four strokes behind Dori Carter of Ole Miss and Tulane’s Daniela Holmqvist, who are tied for the lead.

Darah Newell fired an 80 to tie for 34th, and Ana Garcia’s 84 ranked 50th. Nina Offenberg turned in an 85, and Claudia Wolf’s 86 rounded out USA’s scorecard.

The Rebel Intercollegiate resumes Saturday with tee times for the second round beginning at 7:45 a.m. Sunday’s final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
