Jag Baseball Pounds Nicholls 11-2

THIBODAUX, La. ? Making his first start on the mound since he joined the University of South Alabama program in 2008, Ryan Bohanan took care of his own run support.

Bohanan drilled a three-run homer, then allowed only one hit in 3.0 innings to get the win as the Jags (19-20) rolled to an 11-2 victory over Nicholls (17-22) Tuesday night at Ray Didier Field.

Adam Heisler went 4-for-6 with three runs and a pair of RBI, and three Jag relievers combined with Bohanan on a four-hitter.

The Jags got on the board in the first when a two-out error was followed by a David Doss walk and Bohanan’s blast.

Nicholls cut the lead to 3-2 with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second when Bohanan made one of his only mistakes with a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. He atoned for the error by driving in David Doss, who was in scoring position after a single and a steal, in the next half inning to extend the Jags’ lead to 4-2.

USA put the game out of reach in the fourth when each of the first five batters reached base safely. Chris Davis doubled, Clint Reynolds reached on a bunt single, and Zach Grichor walked to load the bases.

Heisler and Doss followed with consecutive RBI singles, and Brad Hook put the Jags ahead 8-2 with a two-out RBI double.

Michael Raia came on in relief to start the fourth and faced only one batter over the minimum while allowing one hit in 4.0 scoreless innings. Jake LeBlanc and Greg Johnson each allowed one hit in 1.0 inning of work to complete the Jags’ second game of the season with no earned runs allowed.

Heisler led off the sixth with a double and came around to score on Doss’ RBI single. With his second RBI of the night, Doss moved into a tie for second place with Ryan Mulhern on USA’s all-time list with 180. He trails only Luis Gonzalez with 183 career RBI.

The Jags look to extend their four-game winning streak when they return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday night at Stanky Field to host Alabama. Chris LaGrow, who earned the win when USA beat Auburn in their last home game on April 14, is slated to start for the Jags.
