JAG SOFTBALL TAKES SERIES 2-1 AGAINST FIU

MIAMI, Fla. ? In the final game of the weekend series the University of South Alabama softball team fell 5-0 to Florida International Sunday at University Park Softball Complex.

 

USA (24-22-1, 9-8 SBC) fell behind in the first when FIU (25-26, 9-10) loaded the bases with two outs. Katie Bell put the Golden Panthers up 1-0 when she crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

 

In the bottom of the fifth, FIU stretched a 2-0 lead after Kim Rodriguez came home on Jenny Welch’s sacrifice fly to center.

 

The Golden Panthers put up two more runs in the sixth when Iriseldis Soberon and Desiree Fink came home on a single through the left side by Bell. Bell scored two batters later on Ashley McClain’s sacrifice hit to put FIU up 5-0. All runs in the inning were unearned. Bell went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.

 

With no outs in the sixth, USA brought in Shannon Smith for Haley Hopkins (0-2), who left the game after five innings and two strikeouts. Kasey Barrett (13-11) got the win with seven strikeouts in seven innings.

 

Katie McGuire went 1-for-3 at the plate, with one double in the seventh.

 

USA softball will play next in Hammond, La., in a 6 p.m. matchup against Southeastern Louisiana.
