DENTON, Texas --- The University of South Alabama breezed into the semifinals of the Sun Belt Women’s Tennis Championships, defeating Arkansas State 4-0 Saturday afternoon at the Goldfield Tennis Center.
The third-seeded Jaguars win their 11th straight match and improve to 14-3 on the season. They will face either FIU or Louisiana-Monroe Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
“It was nice to get that first win and get a few points under our belt and get ready for tomorrow,” said USA head coach
Jaco Keyser.
USA’s teams at Nos. 1 and 3 lost a combined five games en route to the doubles point. Seniors
Michaela Babicova (Piestany, Slovakia) and
Sylvanie Spangenberg (Pretoria, South Africa) won 8-2 at the top flight and sophomore
Parija Maloo (Mahrastra, India) and freshman
Alina Volman (Lugansk, Ukraine) took No. 3, 8-3.
“We played pretty solid doubles,” said Keyser. “We still don’t feel like we’ve put up a complete doubles point. Hopefully tomorrow all three teams will play well at the same time.”
The Jags’ victories in singles were all in straight sets. Maloo and Volman won 6-1, 6-2 at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, and sophomore
Erica Krisan (Marietta, Ga.) defeated
Jenny Herring at No. 1, 6-4, 6-2.
“It was just a solid team effort,” said Keyser.
