AUBURN, Ala. ? The University of South Alabama softball team (22-20-1) came out on top in the 10th inning to get a 3-1 win Tuesday night against Auburn (27-17) at Jane B. Moore Field.
The game remained scoreless going into the final inning until Kait Chernomaz’s single to center field brought home pinch runner Marissa Boyd. Chernomaz went 1-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and one run scored.
With one run out, the Tigers brought in Jenee Loree for Anna Thompson to try and shut down a Jaguar rally. Thompson (13-9) left the game after 9.1 innings in the circle, striking out 12. Loree would finish the game by recording the final two outs by strikeout.
Christin Crocker loaded the bases for Katie McGuire after she hit a shallow single to first. McGuire put USA up 2-0 on an RBI single up the middle that plated Kelsey Volz.
The Jags stretched the lead to 3-0 in the next at-bat when Carolina Mendoza was hit by a pitch to push around Chernomaz.
In the bottom of the 10th with two outs, Katie Colton moved into scoring position on third after Cassie Trosclair singled through the right side. Lindsey Harrelson brought home Colton on a double to left field for Auburn's only run of the game.
The last inning was the first played with the international tiebreaker rule, with both teams starting their at bat with a runner on second base.
Beth Pilgrim (13-10) notched the win after throwing 10 strikeouts in 10.0 innings of work.
“Beth threw a great game and gave us a chance the entire time,” said head coach Becky Clark. “She hung in there until our offense could come around. The team really fought hard for the win tonight.”
