NORFOLK, Va. --- University of South Alabama senior
Marek Sramek (Skalica, Slovakia) earned his second win over a top 100 opponent this season to give the USA men’s tennis team a 5-2 win over Old Dominion Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The Jaguars even their record at 11-11 on the season heading into the Sun Belt Championships next weekend in Denton, Texas. The Monarchs drop to 17-12.
The Jags earned the key doubles point when freshmen
Leo Dominguez (Paris, France) and
Dauw Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) outlasted
Aleksandr Seleznev and
Alex Funkhouser 9-7 at No. 2. USA’s duo of sophomore
Aaron Krisan (Marietta, Ga.) and Sramek won 8-3 at No. 3.
“I thought we started slow in doubles and that could have backfired on us,” said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. “But we closed it out and gave us good momentum into singles.”
Victories by Kruger at No. 5 and freshman
Hanno Bartsch (Pretoria, South Africa) at No. 6 put the Jags ahead 3-0 and after a loss at No. 2, Sramek clinched the win 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 over Seleznev, ranked No. 80 in the nation.
Kruger lost the first set 2-6 before winning the final two 6-2 and 6-3. Bartsch won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
“The good thing about today is that guys like Aaron and Marek were able to win a set, lose one then come back take the third. It’s always good to have those three-set wins towards the end of the season because it’s a little boost of confidence showing you that we’re tough going into the conference tournament.”
Sramek is now 2-1 against top-100 opposition and is 7-3 at the top singles flight.
“Marek played very tough,” said Brochu. “Winning 6-0 in the third when the first two sets were extremely close shows you how tough he is. And even though it was 6-0 he had to fight for every single point. He played like a champion ? that’s what our co-captain should do.”
