SOFTBALL FALLS TO CAJUNS IN FINAL GAME OF SERIES

MOBILE, Ala. ? Louisiana-Lafayette (25-10, 7-5 SBC) outlasted the the University of South Alabama (21-20-1, 7-7 SBC) softball team 3-0 Saturday at Jaguar Field, although the Jags captured the Sun Belt Conference series by winning two of three games this weekend.

 

ULL put up three runs in the third after Vallie Gaspard’s single to left center brought home Erikka Murphy. Two batters later Melissa Verde put the Cajuns up 3-0 when her double to left center plated Gaspard and Karli Hubbard. Gaspard went 1-for-2 at the plate with one run scored and one RBI.

 

“The kids fought hard today,” head coach Becky Clark said. “We couldn’t get the matchups that we wanted in situational things on offense.”

 

Beth Pilgrim (12-10) threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and no walks. Brittany Cuevas (2-1) picked up the win with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

 

“I am really proud of the kids for their effort this weekend,” said Clark. “ULL is a great team and I’m proud of my kids and how they fought as hard as they did.”

 

USA will play next in a non-conference contest when it travels to Auburn, Ala., to face Auburn at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
