MOBILE, Ala. ? Cory Myers allowed just two runs on four hits in 7.0 innings of work to lead New Orleans to a 10-2 win in Sunday’s rubber game against the University of South Alabama at Stanky Field.
New Orleans (7-13, 3-6 SBC) jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the second inning, and USA (8-13, 1-5 SBC) didn’t put any runs on the board against Myers until the bottom of the fifth inning, when a pair of runs cut the Privateer lead to 5-2.
USA starter Brandon Sage worked a perfect first inning with a pair of strikeouts, but he ran into trouble in the second when Jerad Comarda led off with a double and Nick Mitchell followed with a two-run homer.
Comarda went 4-for-5 with two runs on the day to lead a 15-hit attack by the UNO offense.
Sage took the loss after allowing three runs, two of which were earned, in 3.0 innings of work. Myers earned his first win of the season by setting season highs with 7.0 innings and six strikeouts.
UNO added an unearned run in the third when a Jag error loaded the bases before Nick Schwaner was hit by a pitch. Alan Harris added a pinch-hit, two-run double in the fifth to put the Privateers ahead 5-0.
The Jag offense didn’t get going until Brandon Brown came on as a pinch hitter and drilled a double off the left-field wall, and Clint Reynolds was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out in the fifth. Zach Grichor delivered a RBI single and Adam Heisler drove in the Jags’ second run with a groundout to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Grichor finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk and a RBI, and Bohanan went 2-for-4. Heisler walked twice, and Brown’s double was the Jags’ only other hit.
The Privateers added five runs over the next two innings against Miles Ethridge before Jarrett Bailey, Michael Raia and Greg Johnson came on to hold them scoreless the rest of the way.
However, the Jags squandered Ryan Bohanan’s leadoff double in the sixth and were unable to capitalize in the ninth when Donnie White walked the bases loaded with two outs.
USA returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Mississippi State. The Jags will look to even the season series after the Bulldogs won 5-1 in Starkville, Miss. on Feb. 24.
Notes: New Orleans won a series in Mobile for the first time since sweeping the Jags in 1994 ... Zach Grichor extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games with a first-inning single ... David Doss’ career-high-tying, 14-game hitting streak was snapped with his 0-for-5. He has had four hitting streak of 14 games in his four-year career.
