TURNOVERS, POOR SHOOTING DOOM JAGS IN LOSS AT TROY

TROY, Ala. ? Troy forced 17 turnovers and held the University of South Alabama to 35.7% shooting to defeat the Jaguars 63-58 Saturday night at Trojan Arena.

The game was the final regular-season contest for both teams. They will await an announcement of their opponent in the Sun Belt Tournament on Sunday.

Troy goes to 19-11 overall and 14-4 in the Sun Belt while South Alabama drops to 17-12, 10-8.

“Offensively we just didn’t make enough plays,” said USA head coach Ronnie Arrow. “We didn’t attack the zone good, we had some guys that didn’t play well tonight and now we’ve got to go back to the drawing board. We have to have all of our guys show up ready to play for the tournament.”

USA senior Domonic Tilford (Louisville, Ky.) led all scorers with 17 points. Fifteen of the 17 came from behind the 3-point line, part of a 5-for-12 effort from long range. Junior Bryan Sherrer (Monticello, Ark.) contributed 12 points off the bench.

Michael Vogler led a contingent of four Trojans in double-digits with 13. Tom Jervis grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked seven shots.

South Alabama outrebounded Troy 45-34 but lost the turnover battle 17-8.

The Trojans never trailed and led by as many as 10 in the second half. A 7-0 run cut a 10-point deficit down to three with 6:14 remaining. But Troy answered with a 6-1 spurt to push the lead back up to eight.

Two foul shots from Sherrer with 25.1 seconds left pulled USA to within 61-58 but Brandon Hazzard sank two from the stripe and a 3-pointer from Tilford on the Jaguars’ penultimate possession was off the mark.

“We’ve just got to do better offensively,” said Arrow. “We didn’t execute and didn’t have an offensive threat tonight.”
