Jags Stumble In 12-0 Loss At Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? Kyle Lindsey threw a four-hit, complete-game shutout in his first career start to lead Southern Miss to a 12-0 victory over the University of South Alabama Wednesday night at Pete Taylor Park.

Lindsey, a transfer from Pearl River Community College, walked one and struck out 10. He threw 64 of his 95 pitches for strikes and allowed only one runner to advance past second base.

USA (2-4) starter Miles Ethridge was saddled with a tough-luck loss after allowing just one run on five hits in 4.1 innings. Ethridge worked around a leadoff double in the fourth inning, but Taylor Walker’s fifth-inning double proved to be the difference after he came around to score on Bo Davis’ RBI single to put the Golden Eagles ahead 1-0.

Michael Logan came on in relief and got out of the fifth without any further damage, but ran into more trouble in the sixth and seventh. Corey Stevens led off with a double, then came scored after a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to give Southern Miss a 2-0 advantage after six frames.

USM (5-0) strung together four consecutive hits with one out in the seventh, then broke the game open with a walk and three consecutive run-scoring singles. Walker got the rally started with a single, and Davis knocked a two-run homer to right-center. Logan was chased from the game after a Kameron Brunty single and a Brian Dozier double put a pair of runners in scoring position.

Southern Miss plated four more runs in the eighth off reliever Chris LaGrow, who saw his first action of the 2009 season.

Clint Reynolds stole a base and went 2-for-4, giving him his second straight multi-hit game after notching the first of his three-year career Tuesday.

USA continues on a season-long stretch of eight consecutive games away from Stanky Field when it travels to DeLand, Fla. for Stetson’s Bright House Invitational this weekend. The Jags take on Southern Illinois Friday, Iowa Saturday and Stetson Sunday. Both of the first two games start at 1 p.m., and Sunday’s finale is slated for a 4 p.m. first pitch.

Notes:  Wednesday was the first time the Jags were shutout since March 7, 2008 against top-ranked Arizona ... USA’s four hits were its fewest in a regular season game since March 7, 2007, when the Jags had four hits against Arkansas State ... Bohanan extended his hitting streak to five games and has hit safely in 14 of the past 15 dating back to last season ... Freshman outfielder Matt Drake saw his first action at USA when he pinch hit for Brandon Brown in the eighth inning.
