BATON ROUGE ? South Alabama senior Louise Faye set a new school record in the triple jump, and the Jags and Lady Jags combined for five season-best performances Friday at the LSU Twilight. The meet was USA’s final meet before next weekend’s Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships.
“I thought we had some good performances,” USA head coach Paul Brueske said. “We had a lot of season bests, but it was good to work out the kinks now so we’ll be ready for conference. We took a small group in the more technical events to get a little more experience and prepare for the conference championships.”
Faye broke her own school record of 11.68m with a jump of 12.00m (39-04.50) to finish in second place in the triple jump. She finished just 3.25 inches out of first place.
Emily Sawyer set a season-best mark in the pole vault with a vault of 3.51m (11-06.25), and earned a third-place finish. Ebone' Williams also set a season-best mark in the women’s weight throw with a toss of 14.99m (49-02.25).
USA’s men’s team captured three-top ten finishes in the one mile run. Richard Schmitz placed fourth with a season-best time of 4:24.27, while Zac Edwards finished fifth just behind Schmitz with a time of 4:24.37. Onesmus Too also ran a season-best time of 4:27.70 to earn an eighth-place finish.
“I think we’re showing steady improvement; we’re just trying to get better each week,” Brueske said. “But I think we’re going to have some good performances at the conference championships.”
USA will close its indoor season next weekend at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Jonesboro, Ark. The two-day competition will take place Saturday, Feb. 28 ? Sunday, March 1.
