MOBILE, Ala.? The 72nd-ranked University of South Alabama men’s tennis team dropped a close match to No. 64 Stetson, losing 4-3 at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts Friday afternoon.
In doubles play, the Jaguars (2-5) started strong with a quick win on the No. 2 court. USA’s Marek Sramek/Leo Dominguez defeated the Hatters’ Filip Kricka/Cesare Gallo, 8-2, but the Jags lost matches at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions to give Stetson (2-2) the 1-0 lead.
In singles action the Jaguars fell behind with a straight-sets loss at the No. 4 position. South Alabama won three more matches, while Stetson won two, leaving the match split 3-3.
The deciding match came down to the No. 2 court. Sramek lost the first set to Stetson’s Mark Mestan before rebounding to take the second set, 6-2. Mestan clinched the match by outlasting Sramek 6-3 in the third and final frame.
South Alabama will be back in action at 11 a.m. on Monday against UAB.
