MOBILE, Ala. ? South Alabama track and field will compete in its final indoor meet before the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships, Friday, Feb. 20, at the LSU Twilight in Baton Rouge, La. USA enters the meet after nearly two weeks off from competition.
“Most of the team will not compete this weekend,” USA head coach Paul Brueske said. “Those we are taking are in some technical events. We’re looking to get some good seed times in the mile and some of the technical events. We’re looking to get just a little more experience before the conference meet.”
USA will compete against 24 schools at Friday’s meet, including two SBC schools (Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe).
In its previous meet at the Sewanee Invitational, USA’s men’s and women’s teams posted top-three overall finishes. The men’s team captured second place, while the women’s team finished in third. Seniors Louise Faye and Emily Sawyer both earned first-place finishes at the meet. Faye won the 800m with a time of 2:21.89, while Sawyer won the pole vault with a vault of 3.50m. Freshman Tiffany Medenwaldt broke her own school record in the weight throw with a throw of 15.04m (49-04.25).
Sophomore Javin Dodd set a personal record with his first-place finish in the men’s long jump at the Sewanee Invitational. Dodd won the event with a leap of 7.12m (23-04.50).
“We have athletes who are getting better each meet,” Brueske said. “We just need to train hard this week, and back off next week so we can be healthy and as ready as possible for the conference meet.”
Friday’s meet will begin at 1 p.m. with the men’s weight throw, and conclude at 7:45 p.m. with the men’s 4x400-meter relay.
