SOFTBALL FINISHES ROAD TRIP WITH 10-0 WIN OVER COASTAL CAROLINA

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? The University of South Alabama softball team (3-6) will head back to Mobile, Ala. after compiling a 2-2 record at the Florida Lipton Invitational. Sunday’s 10-0 win over Coastal Carolina was led by Tara Donaldson, who notched four RBI and two runs in the game that was called due to the five-inning run rule.

USA opened the scoring in the third when Katie McGuire hit a long drive to right field for a double. Kelsey Volz walked to put two runners on base, and Donaldson followed by driving in McGuire and Volz on a double to center field for a pair of runs.

Pinch running for Donaldson, Kelsy Donaldson was brought in by Marissa Boyd’s single up the middle for USA’s third run. CCU brought in Ivy McCranie to get the final two outs, but Kait Chernomaz hit a three-run home run over the center-field wall to push the Jags ahead 6-0, to plate the final runs of the inning.

Chernomaz has three home runs on the season, with two coming off of CCU’s pitching staff.

“I thought we swung the bats a lot better than we have been,” head coach Becky Clark said. “We relaxed at the plate and as a result, it has allowed us to take the pressure off our shoulders and be more aggressive. Overall, our hitting has improved and we have done a lot better job with runners in position.”

Christin Crocker started the fourth inning with a double to right center followed by Volz’s single to second base. Tara Donaldson brought in two more runs with a double to right center to extend to an eight-run lead -- she later scored on an error by the catcher. Kristen Hayes brought Boyd across the plate on a sacrifice hit for what would be the final run of the game for USA’s 10-0 five-inning blowout.

Shannon Smith entered in the bottom of the fifth to finish the game for the Jags, retiring the side in order. Beth Pilgrim (3-3) recorded six strike-outs in four innings pitched, scattering four hits without a walk.

Crocker finished 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Boyd added two hits and a pair of runs as well.

“It was nice to end the tournament on a high note. It gives us some momentum going into the game against Florida State,” Clark said. “We have something positive going, I felt like we got a lot done this weekend.”

The Jags return to action Wednesday at 5 p.m. when they head to Tallahassee, Fla., to face Florida State.
