MOBILE, Ala.?The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team rebounded from their loss on Sunday to snag a 7-0 win over the Nicholls Colonels at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts Monday.
“The guys are hitting the ball much better,” head coach Nicolas Brochu said. “It’s good that we bounced back from yesterday’s loss. It’s a good win that helps us get ready for next week’s National Indoor Championships.”
The Jags struck early earning the doubles point with wins by Leo Dominguez/Sergio Ramirez and Aaron Krisan/Hanno Bartsch. USA clinched the sweep when the doubles pair of Marek Sramek and Romain Bocaert pulled out a 7-6 win in the tie-breaker to defeat the Colonels’ Abhaya Prakish and Radu Ionescu 8-7.
“We started out really strong in doubles,” Brochu said. “It was good to see support from our number three team. Every time we win down below, it takes a lot of pressure off of our top team.”
In singles action South Alabama continued its domination. Bartsch made quick work of Sami Mouline, 6-1, 6-1, while senior Sramek defeated Ionecu 7-6 (6-2), 6-4. Ramirez grabbed the victory for the Jags with a tough 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 match over Prakish. Krisan, a sophomore, added a win by defeating Phenyo Matong 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. Newcomers Bocaert and Dominguez picked up wins at the three and four positions to add to USA’s 7-0 victory.
“In singles they were tough,” added Brochu. “Nicholls is a good team and our guys played very well. Sergio (Ramirez) got a good win for us at number one in three sets. Today we had a lot of three sets.”
The Jags will now travel to Los Angeles, Calif. to compete in the ITA National Indoor Championships on Jan. 30.
