SMITH SCORES GAME-WINNING GOAL IN OVERTIME TO LIFT JAGUARS OVER UALR

MOBILE, Ala. ? University of South Alabama soccer freshman Brandi Smith scored the game-winning goal at the 98:51 mark of overtime to lift the Jags over UALR 2-1 on Sunday at “The Cage.”

“A lot of games like this you battle the fatigue and the heat,” USA head coach Mike Varga said. “But we fought through it and we came away with the win. We’re 2-0 in conference, and I couldn’t be happier.”

UALR (5-5-1, 1-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 12:00 mark of the first half when Jessica Beaver netted a header into the right corner of the goal.

USA (4-6, 2-0) answered to tie the match 1-1 at the 46:35 mark of the second half when senior Kelly Tarrant dribbled up the middle of the box and scored her first goal of the season.

Smith netted the game-winner with 1:09 remaining in the first overtime period when she dribbled past two defenders and fired the shot into the back left corner of the net.

USA forward Tiara Smith assisted in both Jaguar goals in the match.

The Jags attempted seven shots on goal in the match, while UALR attempted four.

USA will continue conference play on Friday, Oct. 3, when they take on Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
