MOBILE, Ala. ? University of South Alabama Director of Athletics Joe Gottfried announced Thursday that John Singletary has been promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Equipment.
Singletary, who is in his 20th year with Jaguar Athletics, has served as the program’s equipment specialist since 1989.
“We are excited with the promotion of John Singletary to this new administrative position. He is very deserving and very capable of handling the new responsibilities,” said Gottfried. “He is a terrific employee who has been loyal to our university and our athletics department.”
Singletary’s responsibilities include the organization and supervision of the Health, Physical Education and Athletic facility, and he also coordinates scheduled activities and maintenance efforts for Jaguar Gymnasium. In addition to handling purchasing, storing and distribution of all equipment and apparel for each of the program’s 17 sports, Singletary has responsibilities assisting with game operations, working with officials at basketball and baseball games.
And, he was a member of the committee that helped design the new logo debuted by the school the last week of August. Singletary also serves as a member of the committee that nominates candidates for USA’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
In the spring of 2006, Singletary was presented the inaugural Matt Smith Award given to the athletic department staff member who consistently goes the extra mile, is an example of the spirit of commitment and strong work ethic, and has a deep sense of pride in their job.
Singletary has been with the university since 1981 when he began as a graduate assistant in youth and adult education. In 1982, he spent time as acting intramural activities director while working with USA’s campus recreation office until ’87. He also served as a weight-training instructor in the summer of 1986.
He shifted to a position in the department of education as an equipment technician in January 1988, adding responsibilities with the athletic department in December 1989.
During his tenure, Singletary has been responsible for overseeing numerous graduate assistants in the physical education program.
“I am definitely excited about this promotion, it is a great honor,” Singletary stated. “I would like to thank Mr. Gottfried, [Senior Associate Athletic Director] Ms. [Pam] Young and [Associate Athletic Director] Mr. [Hal] Williams for having confidence in my abilities. Earning this promotion has been a goal of mine since becoming involved with athletics.”
A USA alumnus, Singletary received his bachelor’s degree in history in 1976 and completed his master’s work in health and physical education in 1986. A native of Mobile, he is married to the former Paula Morgan. The couple has three children ? Ryan, Ty and Callie.
