TWO SECOND-HALF GOALS PROVE TO BE THE DIFFERENCE AS USA DROPS HOME-OPENER 2-1 TO SOUTHERN MISS

MOBILE, Ala. ? Southern Miss scored two goals in the final 25 minutes of play that proved to be the difference as South Alabama fell 2-1 to the Golden Eagles Tuesday night at “The Cage”.

 

The Jags took a 1-0 lead at the 41:47 mark of the first half when senior midfielder Anna Ellingsen scored on an unassisted goal from 30 yards out and sent USA into the intermission with a one goal lead.

 

Southern Miss (1-0) battled back in the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Golden Eagles senior forward Obafemi Alao recorded her first goal of the half at the 64:03 mark on a free kick assisted by Sarah DeFatta.

 

Alao later scored again, this one coming at the 86:16 mark on a corner kick.

 

South Alabama senior goalie Kelsie Langford recorded eight saves in the contest, leaving her two saves of tying the program’s all-time career total of 305.

 

The Jags recorded six shots on goal, while Southern Miss attempted 11.

 

With the loss, South Alabama falls to 0-2 on the young season, and will return to action Friday night when it hosts Nicholls State University at “The Cage”. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
