STAUNTON, Va. -- South Alabama rising junior Lance Baxter pitched his first collegiate no-hitter this past Thursday night for his summer league team in Staunton, Va. The lefthander faced just one batter over the minimum, allowing just one walk and one batter to reach on an error.
Baxter struck out seven and walked one in a 2-0 victory over the Waynesboro Generals. With two outs in the first, he walked Evan Webb but then picked him off first base. The Robertsdale native retired the next 19 batters he faced before Rhett Stafford reached on an error with one out in the eighth inning.
After that, Baxter continued to mow down the Generals, fielding the game's final out when Ryan Danbury tried to bunt his way on base.
All told, Baxter threw 101 pitches, including 70 for strikes. His no-hitter was preserved by several fielding gems, including two by shortstop Donovan Huffer. On one, he went deep in the hole to nail Stafford on an off-balance reverse throw to first in the second inning. And on another, he charged, and short-hopped a slow grounder.
"I've watched a lot of baseball, and to get a no-hitter you have to have a lot of great defensive plays," Baxter told the Staunton News-Leader. "Tonight, I just located my fastball really well. Getting ahead with the fastball and making them hit my pitch was the key."
"He went past his limitations," Braves manager Lance Mauck said about Baxter, who last pitched a no-hitter in high school. "He was in control of all four of his pitches."
Joining in the historic event was South Alabama teammate Brad Hammac, who has split time as the Braves' starting catcher this season.
