SOUTH ALABAMA RALLIES TWICE, LOSES 8-6 IN NINTH TO LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE

Official Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. --

MOBILE, Ala. -- South Alabama rallied from 4-2 and 6-4 deficits Sunday afternoon, but surrended two runs in the top of the ninth to drop an 8-6 decision to Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday afternoon at Stanky Field. The win gave the Ragin' Cajuns just their second series win in Mobile ever and first since 2000.

The Jaguars (22-18, 9-9) allowed 15 hits and committed a season-high five errors, but only one of ULL's runs were unearned. On the offfensive side of the plate, Clint Toomey, Ryne Jernigan and Ryan McCrory each had two of the team's nine hits.

Trailing 6-4 in the eighth, South Alabama gained its biggest rally of the day. Toomey doubled down the left field line to start the inning. A walk around two two outs put runners on first and second for McCrory, who hit a 1-0 pitch over the center fielder's head for a double, driving in both runs.

But in the top of the ninth, a leadoff walk and sacrifice opened the door for the Ragin' Cajuns (20-19, 10-11). A bad hop single to shortstop put runners on the corners, then Matt Goulas hit a check-swing, 0-2 single through the right side to put ULL back in front, while a groundout brought home the final run.

South Alabama opened a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Chris Davis hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in Jernigan, who had singled and gone to third on a double by McCrory.

Louisiana-Lafayette opened its first lead with a run in the third and two in the fourth. Matt Hicks delivered an RBI single to even the game at one, then William Long homered to right with one out in the fourth. Josh Logan followed with a double, then stole third and came home when David Doss' throw went into left field.

Another fielding error led to run in the fifth and a 4-1 Cajun lead. Chance Harst hit into a fielder's choice before Hicks doubled to left. When the throw came to second in time for a play, the ball was kicked out of Jernigan's glove, allowing Harst to come in.

South Alabama got a run back in the fifth when Jake Overstreet doubled in Bunky Kateon, then tied the game in the sixth. Three straight hits -- a Toomey double, Doss triple and Jernigan single accounted for two run and a 4-4 tie.

But ULL jumped right back in front with runs in the seventh and eighth. The first was unearned as a result of a grounder that got through the legs of Bohanan at first. The Cajuns took an 6-4 lead when they strung together two singles and a double after two outs had been recorded.

"We have been playing great defense, so to have a game like that is disappointing," Head Coach Steve Kittrell said. "There were some strange plays and we had a couple of errors that are hard to swallow. I thought when we tied the game, we would win, but (Louisiana-)Lafayette battled back. They got hits when they needed them."

The Jags dodged bullets all day as ULL left 15 runners on base, included the bases loaded in a scoreless second.

South Alabama continues its homestand with a pair of midweek games at Stanky Field. The Jaguars welcome Jackson State on Tuesday and Alabama on Wednesday. Both games begin at 6 p.m.
