LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? Brandon Sage pitched eight solid innings and South Alabama scored all the runs it would need in a four-run fifth during a 4-3 Jaguar victory over UALR Sunday afternoon at Gary Hogan Field. The victory gave the Jaguars the rubber game of the weekend series.
UALR (8-24, 4-12) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after on strength of two home runs by catcher Robert Taylor. The first was a solo shot to lead off the second, while the second came with a runner on base in the fourth.
But after having just one hit and two baserunners through four innings, the Jaguars (20-16, 8-7) broke through in the fifth. Bunky Kateon and Derek O'Reilly singled to start the frame. After Chris Davis hit into a fielder’s choice to leave runners at the corners, Jake Overstreet doubled down the left field line to cut the deficit to 3-2. Ray Kruml tied the score at the three with his second RBI bunt single in as many days, and later scored the go-ahead run. He stole second and went to third on wild pitch before Doss singled one out later.
Sage was masterful on the mound, scattering six Trojan hits to improve to 3-1 on the season. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven. Greg Johnson retired all three batters, one by a strikeout to earn his eighth save of the season.
"This was a great pitchers' duel," Head Coach Steve Kittrell said. "Brandon was outstanding for South Alabama and (Ashur) Tolliver was outstanding for Little Rock. It was a great game to watch and a big win for the Jaguars. We finally got some breaks in the fifth, mainly the bad hop single by Bunky."
Bohanan and O'Reilly each finished with a pair of hits. The Jaguars finished with eight on the afternoon. Tolliver remaining winless in four decisions after taking the loss for UALR.
South Alabama continues its road trip Wednesday night at Auburn. First pitch on the Plains is set for 6 p.m.
