NEW PORT NEWS, Va. ? The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team continued its solid play in the Commonwealth state with another strong outing knocking off former Sun Belt Conference member Old Dominion, 4-2, Saturday. With the win the No. 65 Jaguars improved to 12-8 on the year, while ODU fell to 18-14.
“Today was hard. ODU played very good doubles at no.1 and took the doubles point,” head coach Nick Brochu said. “ In singles, ODU came out very strong but we were able to answer.”
For only the second time this season, Brochu’s club dropped the important doubles point, but was able to regroup and make up ground needed in singles play to gain the victory. Jack Baker and R.J. Nagel were the only South Alabama netters to win in doubles at the number-two position.
In singles play, 28th ranked Baker and Nagel gained the first-two points and then Marek Sramek added a third. Freshman Aaron Krisan clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 mark over Yakov Diskin.
“Winning in 3 sets at no.1 and no.3 is an example of our hard work during this season,” Brochu added. “It is great to see our freshman Aaron clinched the match for us. Aaron now plays with a lot of confidence.”
South Alabama will play one more match in Virginia as they stay in New Port News to take on Virginia Commonwealth at 10 a.m., Sunday. Final match results can be accessed at usajaguars.com.
