CORPUS CHRISTI, Tex. ? South Alabama took an early lead, but was unable to bounce back after giving up an eight-run fourth inning, as the Jags dropped a 10-4 decision to Notre Dame in day two action of the Whataburger Baseball Classic in Corpus Christi, Tex. Saturday.
David Doss and Ryne Jernigan each homered for the Jags, which fell to 7-5 on the season. Lance Baxter took the loss; he is now 0-3. Wade Korpi picked up the win, evening his record at 1-1. South Alabama will look to salvage the weekend Sunday against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and 4 p.m.
The Irish drew first blood in their opening inning, taking advantage of a botched pick-off attempt at first base by Baxter. The extra 90 feet allowed Brett Lilley to move to third on an A.J. Pollock single. Jeremy Barnes then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to open the scoring.
USA drew level in the top of the second. Bunky Kateon led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Sean Laird singled through the left side. Ray Kruml lined a two-out single to left to score Kateon and get the Jags on the board.
The Jags took the lead in the top of the third inning and used the long-ball to do it. Doss led off the inning by hammered a long home run to left field. Jernigan then followed with a line-drive, solo shot to left field. It was the first set of back-to-back home runs for the Jags on the season.
The Irish blew the game open with an eight-run fourth inning, chasing Baxter after allowing six hits in the frame. Miles Etheridge came on to replace Baxter and allowed one unearned run. In the inning, the Irish sent 12 men to the plate. Four of the runs were earned and four of the runs were unearned.
South Alabama looked to get back in the game as it loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the fifth inning, but Korpi then got Kateon to bounce into a run-scoring double play before Sean Laird popped out to right field to end the Jag fifth.
The Irish padded their lead with a single run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sherry lofted a high fly ball to left field which got in the strong wind and flew onto the hill behind the left field fence for a solo home run and a 10-4 ND lead.
The Jags were unable to muster anything in the final four innings and Notre Dame held on for the win. South Alabama will take on the host TAMUCC in the final game of the Whataburger Baseball Classic Sunday at 4 p.m.
