WICHITA, Kan. -- 52nd-ranked South Alabama won four of six singles matches Sunday afternoon to defeat No. 61 Wichita State 4-2 in women's tennis action. The match was played indoors at the Wichita Country Club as a steady drizzle engulfed the area all morning long.
The Jaguars took control of the match early. In the No. 1 match, USA's Adrianna Solarova defeated WSU's Stephanie Dalmacio in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, while USA's Michaela Babicova took the No. 2 match with a 6-4, 6-0 win over WSU's Anna Egorova. The No. 3 match went to USA's Erica Krisan, who defeated WSU's Florentina Hanisch 6-4, 6-0.
The Shockers picked up their first win at No. 4 when Torrie Browning defeated Sylvanie Spangenberg in a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 decision. Torrie Browning followed suit with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Katie Welch in No. 5 singles, but South Alabama claimed the match with a No. 6 singles win as Jelena Krivacevic defeated Laryssa Ferreira 7-5, 6-3.
The doubles competition was not played due to the weather and travel considerations.
With the win, the Jaguars are now 15-3 in dual matches this year. They return to action Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Troy at the Lubel Tennis Courts.
