LATE-INNING RALLY LIFTS JAGUARS PAST NEW ORLEANS, 10-7

Official Box Score

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- South Alabama fell behind 6-2 through six innings but scored two in the seventh and five in the eighth to rally past New Orleans, 10-7 Sunday afternoon at Maestri Field. The Jaguars improve to 12-10 overall and 2-4 in Sun Belt Conference play with the win.

David Doss went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and Ray Kruml and Ryan Bohanan each drove in three runs to help South Alabama salvage the final game of the weekend series. Travis Johnson (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win, while Greg Johnson finished the last two innings for his fourth save.

UNO had opened its lead in the sixth on the strength of a pair of home runs. Josh Vander Hey hit a three-run homer to  right field, then Nick Shwaner followed with a two-run shot to put the Privateers up 6-2. But South Alabama struck right back. Ryne Jernigan drew a bases-loaded walk, then Bohanan hit a sacrifice fly to center, cutting the lead in half.

The Jaguars went ahead for good in the eighth. Chris Davis walked and went to second on a Jake Overstreet single. Kruml tied the game at six with a double to center that drove both runners home. Toomey reached on an infield single that was thrown away by the Privateer third baseman, allowing Kruml to score for a 7-6 Jaguar lead. After an intentional walk to Doss and a groundout, Bohanan singled to center for two more RBIs and a 9-6 advantage.

Both teams scored a run in the third. Jaguar Clint Toomey walked with one out, then took third when the throw on his stolen base attempt sailed into centerfield. He scored on a David Doss single. New Orleans answered with an RBI triple by Joey Butler in the bottom of the frame. The Jaguars went up the first time, 2-1, in the sixth on another bases-loaded walk, this one to Davis.

Davis also came home with an insurance run in the ninth, walking and stealing second before an RBI single by Kruml.

Jaguar starter Brandon Sage was effective until the sixth. He allowed just four hits, but walked five enroute to allowing six runs. Meanwhile, Privateer starter Stephen Whalen kept the Jaguars at bay, but the bullpen let them down, allowing seven runs and six hits over the final three innings. Ryan O'Shea (0-1) took the loss after allowing the Jaguars' final four runs.

South Alabama stays on the road for a midweek series at Mississippi State. First pitch for games Tuesday and Wednesday is at 6:30 p.m.
